Just Back report. And i expect one from you when you return and not just a cursory few lines either.
we seem to have had less of these lately and they are so good to read about others trips, costs and experiences.

Smile guides

hi Kitty,
I think that the guides at the palace were 300 - 400 baht. If you get one of these make sure that there english is good. Also remember the dress rules for the temples and DON"T believe anyone who tells you it is closed even the guards.....just try and find another entrance. Last trip we went to Marble Palace, Grand Palace, Reclining Budda and Temple of Dawn by ourselves in one day. Easy to get around but keep a map with you. Try and get hold of one that has English and Thai translations in case you need to ask directions. The person we have booked is 500bt for the day. You pay her transport and entrance fees but this is cheap. And if you have someone like this they can take you to all the places and you won't get lost. We also intend to quiz her on info about where to go to shop etc.
Also don't forget if you are going to be using the BTS a lot get a 15 trip pass. It cost us 300-350bt and we went everywhere for the 2 weeks we were there and still had credit.
If you want the name of guide let me know and you can email her and see if she is available. She has studied either here or US and is studying something and this is how she pays for her education.

Karin

Hi Karin

Would love her details as we want to have a personal guide for the Grand Palace and a couple of other places. You can PM me if you want.

Thanks

Thanx for that info Karin. Sounds like a great idea hiring a guide for the day to take you lots of different place, but we unfortunately wont have that much time, maybe only about half a day to fit some culture in!!! Only 3 nites in Bangkok with the majority of that spent doing some final retail therapy before we fly home!!
And also thanx for info on BTS, but as I said we only have limited time in Bangkok. Although I did read, I think on their website, that you can buy day passes that were really really cheap. We will mainly use skytrain to get to Chatuchuk Markets.
Thanx again. Kitty

OK ... so we are down to 16 sleeps and it all now seems soooooo much realer (is that a word?) Cases are 90% packed, have picked up my travellers cheques and ready and raring to go.

Amazingly, Thai Airways must have only just now realised that in Australia daylight savings is going a bit longer this year and they have just advised our flight time now leaves an hour later, from 10am to 11am. And then of course I panicked thinking the plane was gonna go super-fast to make it to Bangkok is less than an hour quoted previously or else we were gonna arrive in Bangkok an hour later and not have enough time to make our connecting flight to Phuket......

..... and then silly old me just worked out that when we get on the plane, instead of putting our watches back 3 hours as normal, we will put them back 4 hours, taking into consideration for daylight savings ... ahhhhh .... all is fine .... I hope ..... have just changed our stretch limo pick-up times for an hour later so we are not waiting an extra hour at the airport, so now we get picked up at a slightly more civil time of the morning, 6.30am as opposed to 5.30am!!!

And, as I said, I am amazed that they waited until 2 weeks before we leave to actually realise all this .......

Kitty (with only 16 more zzzzzzzzz's)

The problem with these bladdy airlines is they don't count sleeps.
We are 7 hours behind and we fly at 8pm on the 28th. We will have to set off at around 3.15 in the afternoon. We then have 7 hours to dubai and then a further 6 and a bit from Dubai to Bangkok we arrive in bangkok at something like 7 in the evening of the 29th.
11 sleeps to go
