Default Ticket question

Can anyone tell me a person can enter Thailand on a one way ticket? I know some Asian countries will refuse entry if you haven't got a onward ticket. thanks for any help you can give.
Cheers Geri

If you have a proper tourist visa in your passport (ie not the free 30 day stamp) you can enter Thailand on a one way ticket. You have buy the tourist visa at a Thai consulate before you come here.

You can get into the country on a 30 day stamp as well, but only if you have an air ticket out of the country within 30 days...doesn't have to be a ticket back home, an air ticket to any country other than Thailand will do.

I've done this several times over the past few years - a day or so after arrival I used to go to a travel agent or airline office in Bangkok and then buy a return ticket (home and then back to Bangkok again) and this meant I always arrived on a one-way ticket.... never had a problem. I never had a visa (many nationalities don't need one as you get your passport stamped with a visa on arrival).

The reality is.... how would the person on the immigration counter know you don't have a return flight ? they don't ask. I guess they can look on the arrival card and see if you've filled in the departure flight box.
The only people who'd know are the staff of the airline that brought you to Bangkok - apparently they can refuse to let you board the flight to Bangkok if they think there could be a problem.

Mr Kimbo arrived in Bangkok last night on a one-way ticket (he's flying elsewhere as soon as he gets his onward flights confirmed). Nobody asked him anything.

I also always get a return ticket ex BKK....it's usually much cheaper than buying a return in Europe. No problems on arrival (so far) though I did get asked to show an onward ticket by the airline in Paris on check in last time ...first time ever that this has happened. I just happened to have booked an Air Asia flight to Penang the following week and had the printout with me...otherwise they wouldn't have let me board the flight. There may well be problems boarding a one-way flight to BKK even if there are none on arrival.

BTW, rumour has it that the Penang consulate are asking for proof of onward travel even for tourist visa applicants as from Feb 1st... (Thai Visa had a recent thread about this).

I always travel with an e-ticket which is simply a print out from my email. The only thing on it that is important is the confirmation code or number. I have never been asked for this upon entering Thailand. I would make sure the departure card is filled in with a flight number though, the blank boxes will probably draw attention.

On a side note, it depends on your actions and appearance whenever you do anything that involves a security check. Not to offend anyone or be judgemental, but I have seen slovenly backpackers with foreign debris stuck in their nappy dread locks stopped at every security checkpoint with their belongings dumped and scrutinized. I think the average, clean, non-offensive human being that has their documents in order and doesn't blatantly leave off information that officials need to see will get admitted without any problems. Before I leave for any airport, I always shave, shower and put on clean clothes that cover up my tattoos.
