And yes, overnight visitors are allowed in more upmarket establishments. There's often a sign in reception (or even in the room) referring to 'guests'. There's usually an extra payment required (even if a double room has been booked) and all guests have to surrender their Thai ID at reception.
I've never stayed at 5 star hotels in Thailand but have definitely seen these signs in 4 star hotels and serviced apartments.
I've only ever seen one sign (can't remember where) advising that overnight guests are not allowed 'for privacy and security of other guests'.
