We (family of 4) stayed at Somerset Lake Point in Jan '06 (high season) - I think we paid around 4500Bht/night for a 3BR apartment (incl breakfast)for our family of 4 (2 teenagers 15 & 17). The apartment was very modern - 2 bathrooms, kitchen, dining, lounge, a large pool, gym etc. The reception area was similar to that of a hotel with concierge, security etc. There were a couple of restaurants on the ground floor (you had to exit the hotel to access these - we only used the b'fast facility as we were keen to try other restaurants in and around Bangkok. There was also a convenience store on the ground floor where you could purchase beer/spirits etc for relaxing on the balcony/beside the pool. The concierge could arrange transport taxi's if required (easy enough to hail one out the front) - we tended to walk to the BTS - Asok Station or Sukhumvit underground (5-7mins).
I have stayed in BKK hotels on business previously, but in terms of value for money, space, amenities for a family, the apartment accommodation is the way to go.
Have fun - Leo
