I have been to both sides and cannot really make up my mind. Phi Phi is one of the most beautiful places i have visited, Phuket is very nice.
Samui, on the other hand has more of a rustic appeal. In Chaweng, the Soi's are often unpaved dirt tracks, with the main road being uneven, narrow and very congested. Patong is almost the opposite, its sois are paved roads just like most modern cities, with the beach road being quite wide and almost 'Boulevard'ish'. ave dived both sides and actually preferred the East side at Ko Tao/ Sail Rock as one of my best ever.
To sum up, Samui and Phuket are different, but i am returning to Samui this year. ill undoubtedly return to Phuket, even if only as a stop-off on my way to Phi Phi.
