Saw the Chiang Mai smoke on cable tv news this morning. OH DEAR! Very, very thick smoke everywhere - poor visibility that's for sure, not to mention the awful smell and how difficult it must be for people there to breathe properly.
One of the Chiang Mai tourism people said it was due to burning off - not just in Thailand but in neighbouring countries too, so the whole area is affected (similar to the fires in Indonesia late last year).
Those with any sort of respiratory problems would be well advised to keep well away.
At Christmas, I noticed a similar thing but on a much smaller scale on the drive from Bangkok to Rayong.... lots of fires just before Pattaya and right through to Ban Phe - apparently farmers 'clearing their land' or so I was told. Even from those small fires, the air smelt awful.
I can't believe that this sort of thing is allowed.Just environmental vandalism and a major public health issue.
