I have been in the north before when the smoke was bad, it's not pleasant. It stretches from MaiHonSong all the way to Chaing Rai, and into Laos as far as LuangPraBang. It's forest fire smoke, and uncontrolled at the moment, started from slash n' burn farming. It will not be clear in 2 weeks. This happens every year, but this year it seems to be real bad. a few older people have died.
I would change my plans for that area if I were you. Don't rely on your travel agent to give you correct information.
Head south to an island. I would recommend Koh Samed, or Koh Tao.
Any place you choose will be better than the smoke filled air in the north.
Just something to think about.
