I always carry my passport in Thailand. It either goes around my waist in one of those safety belts under my pants or it goes swimming with me in a waterproof container I have. I usually do the same with some emergency money or credit cards.

What do you do when the motorcycle rental guy wants to keep your passport? I gave him my drivers license instead and he actually accepted it. If he loses it isn't a disaster, but a pain to replace when I return home. I have also given my canceled old passport.
