This morning on Pattaya news channel there was a report that Thai police & Immigration raided several bar areas last night and arrested, charged & fined several farang for not producing their original passports. Thai law requires all foreingers to carry their original passports with them at all times.
This might not mean much for tourists as they tend to carry all valuables with them at all times, but it makes life a bit tricky for us long-term expats. For example I could pop down the 7-11 to buy a couple of bottles of beer, get stopped by police, not carrying original passport, off to police station, fined. What happens if I walk across the road from my apartment to the laundry to hand in my dirty clothes - if I forget to put my original passport in my pocket I'm breaking Thai law.
