We have actually done it both ways. First time we went we booked our flight and a standard room through the travel agent as a package then emailed the Holiday Inn direct and upgraded through them... it wasn't a huge difference(sorry can't remember the price)
Last time we booked our flights and Busakorn Wing with the agent and felt we got a good deal. I would email the hotel and ask how much to upgrade. email addy for the reservation manager is ak_hirp@phuket.ksc.co.th They respond fairly quickly.
The Busakorn is well worth it and inside you would never know you were in Patong.
I know there have been a couple of disappointing reports about Patong lately but horses for courses. I feel when someone visits a place often they get 'Phuketed Out' I've come home from Bali feeling the exact same way and all Bali'd out. It got to the stage when I leaned over to my husband and whispered "We won't come back here again" and he agreed, but guess what!! who's going to Bali in May and excited about it? We are.
