I'm really not sure about Thai's pricing model when it comes to the fluctuating Baht,maybe they work on an average price because it does move both ways.
Singapore Air are less expensive than Thai from Australia,but it's via Singapore which can be an advantage if you don't want to travel to Bangkok as they fly Singapore to Phuket with one of their low cost carriers,Tiger Air i think.
