Good for the Thai economy but not fur us, we were lucky and booked well in advance, and your tip about eating / drinking out is very valid, we often just have a couple when out and a about and stock up from the 7-11 if we want a few bevvies on the balcony at night! And if you think Thailand is getting expensive try Borneo!
Granted the hotels mark up but in the shangri-la kota kinabalu a can of coke was £1.30 ish and a small 330ml can of beer nearly £3, 100yds down the road well you can guess!
