rent a decent 3 bedroom house in somewhere like Kamala Phuket for 7,000 Baht a month, so I am sure Samui is less. I would never buy rresidential property in Thailand knowing what I do. There are different parts of Malaysia; do not forget the population is roughly divided equally between Malay Muslims and Chinese, western, Indian, non-Muslim Malays down the Malay Peninsula. Just find a non-Muslim area - I do not mean that with any disrespect to the Muslims (our number one maid in Thailand was a Southern Thai Muslim / Malay and the nicest guy I ever met in Phuket is a local Muslim land owner who also drives the bus), but it does make for less misunderstandings. I do not think it is a good idea to judge Malay Muslims based on what is happening in Southern Thailand right now; do not forget the history of the area and how the Thai's built Buddhist temples in what they and the British previously considered no-man's land in order to block any British expansion. I have no problems with the Malays at all. The only issues comes because I have a Balinese wife who looks Malay and therefore some Malays want to see marriage certificates to be sure nothing bad is going on.
