Not everyone goes to Patong for all the wrong reasons. I have been twice. Once after touring around Northern Thailand with my girlfriend, as a beach break, throughly enjoyed it, and again a year later with her kids and we had a ball. The kids have not stopped talking about it. I wouldn't go again if it was just me and the Girlfriend, agreed there is much more to see and do further afield, but if the kids get their way we will be back before you can say Bangla Road!!!
No, it may not be the REAL Thailand, but its a holiday to enjoy sun, food and good times. The kids loved the shopping, the food, the locals and hotel etc. I'd rather that than have them bored out of their minds as we stand at Angkor Wat waiting for the sun raise/sun set or trekking thru the jungle for two days in Northern Thailand. They can do that later when they are ready for it.
As for yobbo behaviour, we didn't see much, if any, that we haven't seen anywhere else on our travels, including trips to our cities like Sydney and Melbourne!!
Cheers Andy.
