We have those very small umbrellas(they fit in my handbag) You can buy them there. I bought mine in Watsons for 49 baht each. But you are probably not going to be far away from some sort of shelter from the rain. The Thais are excellent in setting up against it. Also most hotels have umbrellas for guests use.
We were in Findigs (the shoe shop on Patong Rd) when one particular storm came thru which was pretty heavy ... the staff had the shutters down in less than a minute and we stayed in the shop until the storm passed (about 10 mins.)
There was another rain downpour we were caught in, but the umbrellas were no use as the wind was strong too. Suffice to say we got absoutely drenched. It was a good excuse for us to buy some clothes!
You can also buy these plastic hoodie type outfits (very cool look :-) but they are practical and again can fit in a handbag.
I love it when it rains, it usually comes down thick and fast but not for that long.
Have a great holiday
