I have travelled to Phuket in October (another less than ideal month) and on balance had more rain than sun. The weather is not as predictable as you might have heard (maybe at one time it was). You just have to be prepared for it to rain any time. We had to travel at that time and made the best of it: it wasn't a huge problem for us. You can still swim in the pool (but not in the sea), providing there is no lightning of course, and it is warm.
I would not want to sway you away from Phuket because the weather could just as easily be bad somewhere else. Weather patterns are just too unpredictable nowadays.
My suggestion is to choose a hotel that is not isolated so that you can easily find a diversion if the weather does turn bad.
Have a great trip.
