I guess you are aware that Thailand isn't celebrating Christmas like in the Christian part of the world. So if that's what you want before exploring the Land of Smiles I would suggest you to head for Khaosan Road in BKK where I'm sure so many western backpackers will be celebrating the holidays.
But after that I would definately recommend you to take a trip to Kanchanaburi for a few days. So many things to do and see around there.
