It is also different for everybody.
We always go to Phuket, as we have friends there, but it has goes down a lot due to heavy trafic and high prices.
Nai Harn beach is nice, but a bit isolated. But there are several midclass hotel with pool. We haven chosen to also make a short trip to Angkor and when we come back to fly to Trang, more in the South. We will stay at Hai island, proberly in the Koh Hai fantasea resort.
After that we go to Koh Lanta, where I thought this hotel was very nice: the casuarina, same price as a good 3 star in Phuket.(see link) On Lanta there are many other hotels in every price category.
After that we are heading to phuket where we will stay the last days.
Another choice is Kata-beach. Many possibilities there. The beach is nice, it is a lively center, but no madness as in patong, wich is 15 minutes away, over the hill. In a sidestreet of the beach road "sawasdee". Beautiful hotel, maybe just a bit expensive as the room, are tasty, decorated, but a bit small. Nevertheless great little place, check their website.
A good price-quality, just a small walk from the beach, is the Kata poolside resort, wich has new rooms, pool and interesting prices. Only small property and a bit packed between two other places, wich doesn't bother that much.
Also a great place wich I like the best is the "Andaman Cannacia ", also in Kata. It is on a hill with a great view over Kata beach in some rooms. Beautiful hotel, out of Kata-center, but a 5 minutes walk to it. Beautiful pool and place,but you have to ask for a room in the main-building! Although the hotel looks really nice the decoration in the rooms were starting to look a bit tired, but that was 1.5 year ago, maybe they have refurnished now! The rooms were quiete big, so it did not bother us.
