Hi
Seeing as you seem pretty keen not to "waste" your pre booked accommodation in Phuket, I would suggest the quickest way to get to the FMP would be to fly with Bangkok Air to Koh Samui and then from Koh Samui, catch the ferry over to Koh Phangan (takes about 40 minutes). This won't take much time whereas your other options of making your way to Koh Phangan would take up more time travelling.
As for accommodation for the night of the FMP in Koh Phangan, trust me when I say not to bother! I was a bit hesitant not to have accommodation booked when we went so I booked a 3 night stay at Coral Bungalows which worked out to be very cheap but when we got there, we never used it. The night of the FMP, some of our group caught the early morning ferry home (6.00 a.m. I think it was) whereas the rest of us stayed on at the party drinking and dancing and made our way back to our hotel only to get our stuff and to wait for the next ferry to head back to Koh Samui. We came across heaps of people that didn't bother with accommodation which seems like the best thing to do if you only want to be in Koh Phangan for the night of the FMP. Also, we didn't know of many places that let you book just one night unless you head far away from Haad Rin.
Hope this helps.
Ali
