Depending of what kind of money you want to spend and what kind of transportation from Bangkok (Airport) to Kanchanaburi you prefer you may arrange pick up from the airport to take you straight to Kan'buri. There is no organised direct buses , and I would estimate about 1500 Baht for a taxi to take you there. On the other hand you may take a taxi from the airport to the southern bus terminal in BKK - I think about 200 Baht - and from there air-con buses are leaving to Kan'buri every 15 minutes, price 95 Baht, takes two hours (make sure you go to the platforms with the blue/white buses).

There are several excellent guesthouses like "Jolly Frog", "Chitanun guesthouse", "Sam's guesthouse" with air-con rooms and separate bathroom for about 350-400 Baht per room (NOT per person). Even if it may sound exciting with the raft guesthouses right on the river I might consider not going there with the kids, but maybe I'm just too scared they might fall into the river.

It's best to organise tours once you get to Kanchanaburi. The are a couple of tours agencies, and I would recommend you "Good Times Travel" located in the street with most of the guesthouses - nice people speaking English. Take a look at the link to their website below where you at the top will also find a link to another very informative website about Kan'buri.

For yourself don't miss the sights around the city such as the Bridge over the River Kwai, the War Cemetary with 7000 headstones for POWs who died during the building of the Death Railway, and the JEATH Museum located in a temple by the riverside. Also the local night market by the railway station is worth a visit. Many nice restaurant by the river promenade, in the evening in the area around the bus station, and also in the street with the guesthouses. For the kids you should spend a day by the beautiful seven steps of the Erawan Waterfall 60 km north of the city - and don't forget to bring your swim suits for a refreshing swim in one of the pools by each step. Also a visit to the Tiger Temple 45 km outside the city might be exciting for everybody - if you dare you may get your picture taken while patting the tiger.

I wish you a nice holiday - and don't hesitate to ask for further informations if you need.
