Hi Mark
A couple of places you might want to check out ...
In Bangkok - the Viengtai Hotel - probably a 3 star - just around the corner from Khao San Road - you'll feel like Leonardo Dicaprio in "The Beach", and it's not too far from the Grand Palace and other places of interest.
I have to recommend Ao Nang too, in Krabi Province. The aonang website says it's "Southern Thailand's most beautiful destination, with spectacular scenery, pristine beaches and a warm, friendly atmosphere" and I would not disagree. Check out "J Mansions"; it claims to be the cleanest guesthouse in Thailand and once again, no arguments from me. The owner, Mr Big, is a real character too. While there, find "The Last Fisherman", possibly the most beautiful bar on a beach there is, especially at sunset.
If you want to spend a few days as far from civilization as you (well, I) can imagine, have a look at the lomlae beach resort website - it was my idea of paradise and easily reached by local ferry.
Hope I've given you a few ideas. In any event, I'm sure you'll love the Land of Smiles as we all do.
Cheers, Phil
