Depends on length of stay. We just had 6 nights there and it was great. You can break it up by taking kayaking and snorkelling trips. We had our 2 boys, 10 & 12 and they loved all the action - lady boys posing etc! Wouldn't like to stay much longer tho as there are beautiful islands to stay at and you don't get to see the real Thailand there. If you have 2 weeks I'd recommend splitting it between Patong and maybe Phi-Phi or Ko Lanta which are easy to access from Phuket.
