I agree with Phil. it really on what you are looking for. I love Phuket but will only go into Patong once a trip for shopping. there are good resturants there too, as there is all over Thailand.
I am not clever enough to work out where you are from but I would say Patong is more European. A big town on the beach with lots of umbrellas and people.
