The difficulty in answering your question is you have left out the most important bit of info - what YOU are looking for. For me, Patong was a bit of a shock because the beach was far busier than the photos suggested; it was wall to wall tourists, jet skis, para-gliders etc. To me, nearby streets seemed as busy as those in Bangkok.
Having said that, it might have been more of a shock because I had just come from Kho Yao Noi where I stayed, along with maybe a dozen others, in basic bungalows on an otherwise deserted beach (which I loved).
In a nutshell, I guess I'm glad I went because it was another new experience, but I don't think I'd go back there. Give me Krabi, Ao Nang, Railay any day.
On the other hand, if you're all dreadlocks and tattoos like my son, Kho Chang might be more your thing.
