I travel in and out of Thailand at least once, sometimes twice or even
three times. Since this question about one way tickets came up so
frequently, I began to enquire with check-in agents regarding their
policy on visas and one way tickets. I had noticed that many of them
previously had flipped through my passport, pausing on the page with
my visa, so I suspected they were checking. Here are the airlines that
check according to the check in agents that I have asked:

SQ (SIN, JKT, ICN), TG (many cities in Asia...can't remember them all!
Also Paris), LH (FRA), NW (SEA and they even checked again during the
connection in NRT when I enquired at their transfer desk about a seat
assigment), OZ (ICN), CX (HKG, LHR) UA (IAD, SEA, NRT). Also, I had an
American friend traveling on NW who had to buy a one way ticket to
somewhere when he checked in at a small airport in the USA with a one
way ticket and no visa.

In the end, the thing to remember is that the final authority comes
down to the check-in agent. This is not to say that all the check-in
agents at all above airlines always check, but be prepared. If you have
don't have a visa, be sure to have plastic as you may have to buy a one
way ticket out if you want to board the airplane.
