Dan, tatts in Thailand fall into 2 styles: traditional Thai tatts, often done by monks with bamboo or wooden needles; and the general international style done with electric needles. You'll see the former style on many Thai men, they often have tigers, religious symbols and Pali script done on their backs & necks. There are many famous tattooing monks around Thailand but you'd need to search them after you arrive. Get talking to Thai men with tatts and ask to be introduced to the monks. The latter style you'll come across in all the major tourist hubs like Samui, Phuket, BKK, Pattaya. Tatts are very popular with young Thais. I'm not aware of any major names in Thai tattoo artists. Once again it's a case of getting there, looking around, checking out the artists' work & prices. From what I've seen the standards in both detail and cleanliness is OK. I had a couple of small tatts done in HatYai a couple of years back, I designed them myself as I prefer having personal tatts.
