In Bangkok we always stay at the Indra Regent Hotel. It is situated in the busy Pratunum market area. The one thing I like about it is that there is a shopping area under the hotel. When you have kids it is handy just to take them down and when they start getting tired you can just take them back up stairs. The only draw back is that there aren't many eating places around. But the coffee shop at the hotel has kids menus. Last time we were there I heard that they were building a supermarket somewhere under the hotel. I will be going again in 4 weeks so I will find out. For this trip there is 3 adults and 2 kids and I booked a family room (2 rooms interconecting)for 3650 baht a night inc breakfast. A single room for a friend cost her 1870 baht.
I have never been to Phuket so I can't advise you on any hotels. We always go down to Hua Hin about 2.5 hours drive from Bangkok.I find the place great to walk around with the kids and is fairly quiet. Although when we went last October things had changed a lot and getting busier and hotels putting their prices up. We normally stay at the Hilton but have also stayed at the Hyatt. Both hotels are great.
