Trains to the south stop off at Hua Hin, Chumphon
(ferries to Ko Tao, Ko Phangnan and Ko Samui) and Surat Thani (shorter ferry rides to Ko Phangnan and Ko Samui) then Trang (handy for many islands, including Ko Muk, Ko Kradan, Ko Ngai, Ko Sukhorn, and the Tarutao Archipelago)and finally Hat Yai (you can also get to the Ko Tarutao archipelago from Hat Yai)

You can get 2nd class fan sleepers too, which cost about a third of what you pay in first class. A bargain, though train prices in Thailand are very cheap compared to Western countries in any case.

The second class sleepers aren't bad, sheets are clean and they make up the beds for you and offer to bring you meals and drinks etc) but you share a carriage with about 40 other people ... bunk beds with curtains like in American films.

There are several trains in the evening, not always sleepers. I usually take the 19.15 from Hualumphong station in BKK (connects with the MRT underground so easy to get to) You need to buy tickets a few days in advance to be sure of getting a sleeper though...especially when it's a public holiday or if there's a Full Moon Party on Ko Phangnan coming up. Tickets can either be bought at Hualumphong station itself or at any travel agency in BKK for a small commission.
