I took the overnight train from Bangkok to Trang 2 years ago. It was a pretty good experience. My wife and I got one of the private sleeper cabins and it was very comfortable as well as affordable. The train left Bangkok around 6PM and arrived in Trang about 7:30AM. There were two fold out beds that the train crew made up for us in the evening. I slept pretty good considering it was a train. It's a unique and less expensive way to travel than by air. We visited Koh Ngai and then Ao Nang. We flew back to BKK from Krabi instead of taking the train because we wanted to save time.
