Default Mobile Internet in Singapore

Hi,

I will be making a trip to Singapore in March 2013. Thinking of renting a portable wifi device to maintain connection back home (emails, skype, watsapp). Does Singapore offers the same rental service of mobile hotspot device as in other Asian countries like Korea and Japan?

Singapore is light years ahead of, say, Japan in this respect! Whilst rental of phones/devices in Japan is necessary because it uses a different system (with a sim card integrated into the device etc), that's not the case in Singapore. Just bring your laptop/tablet/phone with wifi ability and connect to one of the local networks... they are everywhere (cafes, pubs, even across whole public areas).

If you need true mobile internet anywhere and everywhere, then just pop into 7/11 and buy a simcard from a local provider such as Singtel. You will need to check that it has 3G data access (most do, on some sims it needs to be activated first) and you will need your passport as all sim cards are registered for "security purposes" (welcome to "Big Brother" Singapore ) Pop your sim into your unlocked phone, tablet or into a 3G dongle for your laptop and voila!

So no need at all to rent a device like in Japan... just B.Y.O.!

cheers
Steve

Default Mobile wifi rental in Singapore

Hi Andrew and Steve,

I have just visited Singapore. I have to disagree with the point made about the widespread availability of free wifi in Singapore. Their free network wireless@sg is only restricted to certain cafes and it is difficult to gain access, especially for tourist as you have to provide lots of information.

You wouldn't be lying to promote your product (details deleted), would you now?

Note to tourists: Singapore is an ultra-modern, highly-connected efficient city-state; free wifi is plentiful in hotels, bars and cafes. Do not fall for the lies spread these jokers trying to plug their expensive "rental wireless devices" or otherwise. Wireless@SG is not difficult to register for; furthermore, it is free for tourists and covers all the popular areas of Singapore.

Don't believe the lies!

For the record, these two posters are the same person, trying to promote a rented 4G wifi service. If they are willing to deceive and lie to promote their product, then they can't be very trustworthy.

So that warning again... do NOT use expensive rented wifi device services in Singapore... it's cheaper and more reliable to DO IT YOURSELF!
