Hi Jagimc,
There is a fair bit to do on Langkawi. Along with the lovely beaches there are several attractions.
Firstly, getting there. I believe you can fly direct from KL to Langkawi with Malaysia airlines, Firefly or Air Asia (probably a few others to be found with a bit of googling). Obvisouly with KL being inland you cannot take a ferry straight there (and would take a loong tmie anyway) but you can take a coach to Penang (about 5 hours) and then take a ferry across to Langkawi (about 2.5 hours). You can also fly from Penang to Langkawi but as the ferry is only 2 and a bit hours it's hardly worth it.
The airport is very close to the lively Penai Cenang where you will find many resorts and restaurants. This is the area most tourists head to and is also close to Penai Tengah which is i think the second most touristy beach with one of the most popular clubs in the area; Sunba.
For more exclusive (and expensive!) resorts with quieter beaches you can take a look up on the North coast at somewhere like Tanjung Rhu from where you can take boat rides out to various points of interest in the area. Here there is also a sandbar that at low tide allows you to walk out to some of the nearby islands! Great fun but be careful not to head out when the tide is rising!
Also close to the airport, and maybe 20 mins motorbike ride from Cenang, you can find the Oriental Village. From here you can take a very enjoyable and scenic cable car ride up to the top of what i think is pretty much the highest point of the island and offers magnificient views of the beautiful jungle, beaches and other smaller islands. Just be careful if you do this to do it on a clear day. On a wet or cloudy day the cloud will cover the peak and you won't be able to see anything. The Oriental Village also offers some interesting diversion if you have some time to kill with things like a small animal farm, shops, restaurants and on my recent trip you could hire a dirt bike and i even saw some Segways zooming about!
A little further north from the Oriental Village you can find the 7 wells waterfalls. It is quite a slog up the steps (bring some water, or buy some at the shops at the base) but once at the top you can mess about in the pools and even slide down some of the smaller falls! It's great fun but just be careful of the many monkeys. They're interested in anything you leave lying about! And best not to take food up there or they will harrass you for it.
Also, remember that Langkawi is a duty free island so if you like the odd drink or you smoke this is a great place to stock up ;) You can get cans of beer for as little as RM2!
Good luck and have fun. I hope you enjoy it as much as i did!
