Default Air Asia

Air Asia has launched their service from India. A Calcutta-KL round trip is US$200 inclusive of every thing.

Is Calcutta an OK place for a holiday? I was told many years ago that it's a very stressful too-full-on kinda place but I wonder if it's changed over the years.

Cool

I spent three months in India earlier this year and I stopped in Calcutta for a couple of days. Nothing like I expected. The stereotype sets you up for slums and lots of gnashing and wailing of teeth, but the central area was modern, cosmopolitan and had a few nice green areas and some lovely architecture.

Stressful and full-on? Compared to Thailand, yes... but its part of the joy (and curse) of urban India

Traveller's reaction to Calcutta(Kolkata now) is digital in nature. It is either 1 or 0, i.e. you either love it or hate it.
I have scores of friends members of an India travel forum who regularly come back to visit Calcutta. Calcutta is the art & cultural hub in India and very decent people. This is one city where lone woman travellers can safely venture out. There is an underground metro runing the length of the city and also ferries on the river Ganga. The old colonial buildings are fascinating, the National Museum in terms of collection is probably the best in Asia. Book lovers will simply freak out at the College street where a million pavement stalls sell second hand books on every subject under the sun. The bohemian atmosphere at the near by coffee house frequented by writers, film makers, artists and political activists is not to be found any where else in India.
From Calcutta one can visit some very secluded beaches and in winter one can take a tour of the great mangrove lined forests of Sunderbans. This area is also known as the tide country. I suggest reading Hungry Tide by Amitava Ghosh.

I travel AA sometimes when in asia esp Thailand and have done London stansted to KL return with flights to PKT from KL - my problem is NO TRANSIT - so you have to enter KL and leave again within landing and leaving ie go through immiugration twice even if not wanting to stay in KL for any lenghth of time - stupid me thinks and behind times - as you will be behind queues which are caused by this stupid rule - sorry I go on again but KL for me sucks and thsi is one of the main reasons

Well it’s great news for Indian passengers who always choose Air Asia to travel around Asia. Air Asia has proven to be the best in aviation industry. At start it was providing its services to limited destinations but with the passage of time it started growing hence, the world best low cost airline award went to Air Asia in 2010. The best thing about Air Asia is that it didn’t face any major accident. Only one incident was taken place on 7th of November 2004 when air Asia flight skipped the runway and two passengers suffered minor injuries. Anyways I must say it’s a good step by Air Asia for the Asian customers.
