Air Asia definitely changed alot over the years. expanding routes all the way to the UK and Australia. It does offer much more choice now for the customers in Asia

Default AirAsia for 2011 and beyond

I have been using AirAsia for several years now and have been pretty satisfied with the service and reliability of this company. I use them because they are one of the cheapest around, period.

Slowly but surely and generally once a year AA either removes a benefit or adds on an extra charge to there customers.
Water and meals were free at one time
General seating was free.
Carry on were weight free.
No fuel surcharge.
Free airport check in for everyone.

There are more but I just can't think of them right now, however my point is, is that AA is slowly positioning itself as a middle of the road price wise airline and soon there will be the potential for a new comer to move into the lucrative mass people mover discount for cheapskates airline, unless AA remembers who there loyal customers are, and they are not the people in the Premium seats. ?

Air Asia is good. You pay for what you need.
Their meals aren't too bad. Their nasi lemak is actually pretty good imo.
Most importantly, it takes you there and it can be really really cheap when the promo comes around~ so why not? =)

We had a chance to use them on a recent BKK to Krabi return booking and in spite of there being seat capacity and times which suited us I changed my dates so we could fly Thai Air.

I just didn't want the hassle of booking in luggage (at cost), paying for check in, food, seat allocation and so on. You can't determine your final cost on their website without registering all the travellers and more or less finishing the booking.

In the end we booked Business class on Thai and do you know I'm not sure it was that much more expensive. Airport lounge, relaxed friendly service and no extra charges.

If you're travelling light and on your own during off peak periods they may work out good value. But if you're flying peak periods and they are getting low on seats then I found them expensive.

Henry :)

I have been a fan of Air Asia since we first used them for domestic flights in Malaysia in 2003. We used Air Asia this year to fly from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and it was as good as always. They remind me of the South West Airlines. Efficient, affordable and a good deal.

I've used them a fair bit over the last couple of years and my impression has been mostly positive. But...

Firstly, their customer service is awful. The few times I have had reason to contact them for some error made they have never replied to my emails. Upon calling I have felt like I'm talking to a brick wall. No help whatsoever.

Secondly, as a low cost airline I have been very impressed with their prices. I have noted, however, that they have been adding more and more random costs for things (wth is a "customer surcharge" anyway?). There will soon be a hole in the market for a decent low-cost airline as AA gradually price themselves out of that market.

Those 2 points aside, there are many positives. They are still cheap while maintaining a decent level of service. The staff on the flights are generally very polite and considerate. I haven't experienced many serious delays or flight cancellations. This happened only once when the plane failed the pre-flight checks (an electrical fault) and we had to wait for a replacement plane. I actually saw this as a good sign that they will not take risks with their passengers.

All-in-all they are a good carrier but they need to be careful in understanding their place in the market and HOW they became so popular.
