Default Travel questions for South East Asia...

Me & a friend are arriving in Ho Chi Minh city in a couple of weeks. There, we plan on buying motorcycles and traveling all the way to Singapore. Obviously, over a long period of time, stopping at major destinations such as Siem Reap, Bangok, Phuket, and so on. My main concerns are, traveling out of the tourist hot spots and into more local areas that aren't used to seeing foreigners, the Cambodian/Thailand border, and overall safety of the whole picture. Hopefully somebody can read this and give me some good advice, and their thoughts of the journey? Thanks in advance...

Hey Marshall,

As opposed to writing a lengthy post here I want to point you to the following link:

Thailand travel advice

It is an updated page with thailand travel advice. I know you mentioned the cambodia/thailand border, but they are urging against it. Anyways, hope it helps you make the right decision.

Cheers,

I've not done it but I understand the Thai/Cambodian border is ok but the Vietnam one may be tougher. I guess you are heading south to Saigon? Which border crossings were you planning to take?

What type of bikes will you be on? If you go through Cambodia you can experience some of the best dirtbiking known to man out in the provinces. Also if it's a long journey (to Singapore) a bigger bike would be a better bet (for comfort as well as durability).

Bike repair/maintenance is pretty cheap in SE Asia. I got a puncture on my motorbike the other day and it cost 2,000 riel (0.50c) to repair it.

It sounds like a fantastic aventure so keep us posted :) Maybe we can offer some advice on the way.

You are planing to travel a very long journey. How many days will it take to go to Singapore? Do you think you will be able to travel on a bike that far ?
