Talking When I used the old forum

I noticed lots of regular posters chated off subject (less so to do with travel) about their lives, the tv, the weather (of course), how many days there was to go before they were off on holiday again, and even family ills, although I suspect most of the moral support in part came for one young lady called Ali from Australia because they saw her photo on her blog!

Well, it is only natural when you use a forum and get to "know" other users to the extent it becomes a community. But some of it was a bit out of place on the travel forum itself.

I also got a lot of people emailing me about my problems with gangsters appearing outside our home in Phuket (do not worry folks, that is an uncommon event - these gangsters were sent there by an agrieved and crazy business competitor of mine) and about my ongoing problems with the highly corrupt police in Bali. They emailed me because they did not want, quite rightly, to post their messages on the travel chat area itself, not for any other reason.

So I thought for a number of reasons a buddies forum would be a good idea now I have these new forum scripts. So I hope members will use this area to get to know each other a bit better, support one another when needed (bad hair days included), chat about Ting Tong on Little Britain, deride each other's beer preferences and generally have a merry time here.

Anyone

How come no one has used this section yet? Two weeks since Mark made that request and not one post here. Friendly though it is, this forum is primarily here for TRAVEL information. Cluttering up the main travel sections with irrelevant chitchat isn't doing Mark any favors.

Put yourself in the shoes of someone who comes here for a look at the new forum for the first time. It is conceivable that they are not particularly interested in reading about what a poster is having for lunch that day etc. It is also conceivable that they will get the impression this forum is more a cliquey private chat room than an open travel forum and decide it's not for them.

A new forum needs as many members as possible if it is to survive and become a success. Constant off-topic chat may well compromise this. Mark has invested a lot of time, effort (and probably money) setting this forum up and everyone agrees the new format is a great improvement on the old one. Shouldn't we try to help rather than hinder his efforts?

No problem for me, it tales time for people toi become used to the new layout and areas - I can move off-topic posts from one forum to another anyway as I have already done once. I will be moving the domain here real soon and then we should get good rankings in the search engines again (I hope) and more vistors. Early days yet

I think it takes time and it is difficult to segregate in a post. I know also that I must be one of the worst culprits. As for anyone logging on to the site I think that they would find a very friendly community and personally i would want to join in.
This has the makings of a very busy site.

I have only just found this area... but talking about Little Britain it has recently been to Australia (sorry I just can't call it OZ)
God it was funny and Ting Tong was a hit... What really brought the house down was the 'hide the sausage' sketch. Two men were picked from the audience... an older tubbier guy and a gorgeous young 18 year old that David Walliam's character fancied (can't think of the character name but he was a disgraced children's entertainer) anyway, he was quite 'rude' to the older guy saying he was safe lol and all over the young bloke. He tried to pull his pants down and the young fellow put up a really good struggle but was no match for the fit and strong Walliams... he then pulled his feet from under him and he fell back into the stage curtains and he ripped his pants down showing his bare bum on the two huge screens either side of the stage. It was one of the most funniest things I've ever seen on stage but it was so NOT right.

So did this one when it started a few years ago!
talesofasia.com ::

However, over time the owner became increasingly pissed off and blamed falling viewing numbers and posts on spam and "moronic chat". Personally I think the demise of that site was more than partly his own fault... He ignored negative feedback from users and put loyal posters' backs up with his rather inflexible and arrogant "This is my site and I know best" attitude ...that didn't really help things either. Things always work better when people pull together...give and take on both sides.

Sure this site is new and people need to get used to it ...and Mark's laid-back attitude while folk get settled in is to his credit. However he did post a request to limit off-topic chat to this part of the forum and probably has good reasons for doing so as he's a pretty experienced travel forum administrator. Spam and off-topic chat would seem to be major bugbears for travel site administrators. The spam filters look pretty good, so hopefully that won't be an issue, but limiting non-essential chat is mainly in the posters' own hands. Just thought it was about time that folk who want to get to know other posters more personally were reminded that this is the right section of the forum to do it in!

Can we have a chat page. Forgive me if this is too much to ask as I don't fully understand IT. But would like to chat...wouldn't you know.

I would probably use a chat page if it was added

Exclamation Guys

All you have to do is get Yahoo Instant Messenger, ICQ or Skype (my preference). I do not think there are any chat room add on for this version of vbulletin forum because I think chat rooms are old hat now with the advent of Skype, etc.

Thailand Sun My thoughts

Hi all

Yep - me again, after a month of being absent!

I don't know if I am a bit lost with what you're saying here Mark but you're encouraging us to continue to be like how we were on the old forum, right? I'm a bit slow off the mark today - being a Monday and the brain slowly getting back into gear for the working week.

As for your original posting - what was that about the photo on my blog? I don't know if I took that the wrong way or not...again, the brain is unable to function properly this morning... so you can blame my inability to interpret things on that - or, at least, I will for now! haha

I have been very slack with my visits to this forum lately but I am pleased to report that this is due to the fact that I am actually living life like a "normal" 24 year old again. I've been going out heaps more, meeting lots of new people, hanging out with the girls and dancing my a$$ off until 6 a.m. in the morning - just like i used to! It's been rather refreshing and liberating even though I am constantly brought back to reality with Dad becoming very ill every other week. For example, he is hospital now with pneumonia (spelling?) after having difficulty breathing last night and becoming very panicked about it, and also after coughing up a lot of blood. I'll be seeing him tonight to see how he's doing but all in all, remaining positive, being optimistic and making the most of my time with him and my life in general...and that has a lot to do with all of you - and you all know who you are too!

So ... that's my little update for the time being. Sharrie, rest assured that I am going to strive to finish the final JBR (one year on now!) this week. I hope you all remember what happened when and who is who! Should be interesting to find out anyway!

Hope you are all well and taking care of youselves.

Ali x
