Well, Steve did suggest it so I thought I'd start it off but it may need to move it to an area on its' own. Steve - HELP!!!!

So - if you want to eat and drink relatively normally but want to lose a pound or two a week what's the best way to do it?

When we are in Thailand I never seem to gain weight like you do on holiday elsewhere, probably because Thai food is healthy. Problem is, trying to cook at home and make it taste like it does in Thailand hasn't really worked. Does anyone have some recipes they could post?

I would join - BUT - as a real novice cook - ie since xmas I have taken over the cooking in the house and Heather thinks it great and the food is fine BUT its rich food its not slimming food - I could PROBABLY do with losing a few pounds - understatement if ever there was one - bring it on I say

Great stuff, Alison! Thanks for kicking things off.

Good luck everybody - I'm going to join you too and start regimenting my diet again from next week. I won't be able to weigh myself, but I can report back on exercise (there will be lots!) and whether I'm able to resist these delicious newfangled Banana-flavoured Kit Kat Chunkys I've just discovered in Tokyo!

out of my depth here me thinks - I dont over eat - I dont eat chocolate or crisps - I do drink and smoke - if I give up smoking my weight will increase - drinking is a diffo kettle of fish - I once stopped for 9 years and went down to 12.5st and was told to put weight on as I looked skeletal - so since I am doing the cooking nowadays what would anyone reccommend to force my system to burn fat - bearing in mind I am a fat b*****d who does not eat a lot - problem me thinks

Hahaha, this is going to be fun!!
Im with you Steve, its exercise, exercise, exercise and bad things in moderation.

I have been the same weight for years but I also rowed competively for nearly 10 years so was extremely fit and healthy (and still ate chocolates all the time lol).

Then a few years ago I stopped rowing due to helping to care for my mum and once she died I lost the motivation to get back into the 5 day a week (5am start) training sessions and the regattas etc.

So I put on about 3 kilos, but that was ok as Im tall and clothes still fit. I also never gain weight on holidays.

BUT, last year after 4 months in Thailand, plus drinking more bacardi and cokes than I ever have (full strength coke) I added another 4 kilos. Went up a clothes size but still everyone thought I looked the same. But I felt bad!!

So 8 weeks ago I decided the extra weight has to go, so back into training. All I do is Cardio, bike, cross trainer and treadmill. I train one hour a day and love it. I have dropped 7 kilos and now weigh exactly the same as I did at the peak of my fitness in 2002 when I rowed in the World Masters.

Im going to carry on but think theres only 1 or 2 kilos that may come off but the benefits for the good old heart are amazing!!!

I still have treats but otherwise eat very healthily and quite a lot, brekky, lunch, dinner and quite a few healthy snacks. Its amazing how many calories are in chocolate, last week I had a 200 gram choccy rabbit lol, my god 1000 calories in the stupid thing, so now its smaller treats.

If your into soft drinks, stick with diet ones or coke zero etc, no calories !!! I love sugar on cereals but now its a sugar substitute, use Philadelphia light cream cheese instead of butter, no where near as many calories. Watch your bread intake, some brands are so high in calories. A woman wanting to lose weight should be eating around 1500 calories a day and a guy about 2500.

I made Gary start training as well and in the same time he has lost 9 kilos!!!

I also always train with a heart rate monitor, then you know your in the zone your meant to be eg, fat burning!!!

Well I have lots more to say but thats enough for now hahaha.
Cathy

Jax, it is amazing how infectious excercise is. You just need to get a routine going and then it will be harder to give it up than keep going.

Try jumping on a treadmill and walking on an incline for 30 minutes whilst watching TV. Increase speed and pitch by a little every time you do it. Before long you will start logging and you might even start running.

Then you can have a wine or 5 and a Lamb curry and not feel guilty.

I've just gone 6 days without any grog but it's coming up to Friday night and the Footy's on. This is my big test.
