Default Tanjung Pinang

I will be travelling through Asia from March to May and will end up in Singapore. While there, I was wondering about taking the ferry over to Tanjung Pinang and staying there for a couple of days. It seems nice enough.. don't know if it's worth it though, anyone been there who could give some tips on what to do? I was thinking about going on a boat trip to the surrounding islands, and/or going to Trakora beach.

Also, I am a female travelling on my own. Haven't found much info on safety.. is it safe? I will of course stay aware of my surroundings, but this is my first long trip alone (apart from Canada) and I like being at least a bit prepared :)

Thanks in advance!

Hi and a warm welcome to the travel forum! I haven't been over to Tanjung Pinang but from what I understand from people I have spoken to who have, there's not a lot to grab your interest. However, it would certainly be interesting to experience a slice of Indonesia, especially to contrast with glitzy Singapore. For Singaporeans it must be like travelling back in time!

Things to do whilst there? Eat (including lots of seafood!) and explore the markets. It's not very sight-rich other than that... just soak in the atmosphere. As you say, boat trips are a possibility, as are fishing trips if that grabs your fancy.

Regarding safety, you just need to apply the same common sense as you would anywhere else in the world. I would advise wearing a long skirt and maybe covering your arms to stop undue attention being drawn to yourself, but I bet you'll find the local women in shorts and t-shirts anyway! The main thing to look out for is pickpockets and thieves who will grab and run. Keep your bag secure, with a tight grip on it, and don't wear that or flashy cameras etc over your shoulder where they can be taken.

Yeah, I think it will be interesting to see the contrasts to Singapore. I will certainly stay aware of pickpockets!

Thanks for your answer! :)
