Question Is Bali safe to travel to?

My two children (aged 14 and 12) and I were planning to travel to Bali in January 2012, staying at Nusa Dua. I note the Smart Traveller website's current advice for travel to Bali is "Review your need to travel". This is apparently because of the high risk of terrorist activity and threat to personal safety. I have been to Bali twice before and expected the biggest problem to be avoiding Bali belly and other diseases. Hadn't really thought about the security aspect. My husband now thinks the children and I shouldn't go. Any thoughts on whether this is just a scare tactic by the Australian Government or should I be looking elsewhere to holiday on my own with two children?

Hi Heidiho

It is always good to check the Smart Traveller Website to be aware of any warnings. I don't think it is scare tactics, more like "duty of care" towards us as Aussie citizens. It is always good to be cautious though.

It has not stopped us however to travel to Bali, we have been going to Bali for many years now and recently (Sept/Oct.) went to Sanur again for a fantastic holiday. I have to say that I never feel uncomfortable or scared but I do prefer to stay away from really crowded places such as Kuta. Our kids are 12 and 10 and they absolutely love Bali.

Happy New Year and good luck with making the right choice for you and your family!

Syl

Bali is pretty much safe at the moment, but of course you cant be too careful and relax all the way. Just advise your children to always be aware of your surroundings, and do not take any offers from a stranger! Sometimes there will be people offering to carry your bags and everything, just politely say no and smile.

It's always a safe destination. No need to worry. I'm Indonesian from Jakarta. Sometimes i think Australian n the US government exagurate a little bit about travel warnings, did they announce a travel warning during 911? London or Madrid bombing? point is terrorist attacks could happen anywhere, unfortunately it happened in Bali, and since then it has spoiled Bali's reputation.

No need to worry, your children and yourself would enjoy Bali :)
