Thailand Sun Recommendations sought for restaurants etc

Hi All

We are heading back to Bali in a couple of weeks, staying in Legian.

We were there last in 2004.

We already know the island and some great places to visit.

But I know that places change over time, and new places open and so on. We would greatly appreciate recommendations for good restaurants etc, shopping.

Thanks in anticipation.

Mark

OK, I have done some searching on the forum. Here's a summary.
Seminyak: La Lucciola, Ku De Ta, Warisan, The Living Room, Gado Gado
"Eat Street" (Oberoi Road or, its proper name, Jl Lakssmana) Seminyak: Mykonos Tavern, Rumours, Khaima as well as Cafe Moka and Made's ll.
Legian: Warung Kartini in 3 Brother Lane, Wayan and Friends on Jl Padma, the Seaside Restaurant and Ibu Ayu.
Warung Batavia on Jl Raya Kerobokan gets a recommendation too.
Sounds like there is an abundance of great eateries. If anyone else has any recommendations, we would love to receive them! :)

Yeah... well, thanks for that. But we have already bought our tickets and we are off to Bali, rain or shine. I can handle the monsoon. I would be more grateful if you could nominate some great eateries around Legian and Seminyak.

Also, I can't help wondering what would happen to the Bali tourist industry and the thousands of Balinese who feed and clothe their families from their employment in that industry if visitors stopped coming in the wet season.

Salamat Tingal.

Default Restaurants

Hi Mark,

All the restaurants you have mentioned are really good choices. Warisan, Ku De Ta, The Living Room, Gado Gado all excellent and upmarket.

Ibu Ayu is a favourite of mine.....small warung style. The others I've heard of and possibly eaten there but can't specifically remember - all sound like good choices.

Eat Street/Oberoi Road/Jl. Laksmana Restuarants are all good and I also like Mykenos. They are all together so just wander past and take your pick. Bali Bakery is along this road too, a bit further towards the beach in the Seminyak Square which also has a good Deli/Supermarket. Just back from Bali Bakery in Jl. Kayu Jati (I think this is the correct street name) is another place that looks very interesting, sorry the name escapes me but easy to find. Bali Deli in Jl. Kunti has a great selection of imported foods, deli foods, bakery, cafe and restaurant. Jl. Kunti is off Jl. Raya Seminyak not far from Made's II. Everyone knows it if you need directions. Cafe Moka is also a favourite of mine. Le Tebu in Jl. Petitenget is worth a look.

There is also the Swiss Restaurant and Tommy's in the Rum Jungle. The Swiss Restaurant has a good range of choices for both Western and Indonesian food and if you can cope with the Bali-style Mariachi trio, go for it. Bless them..... " to my Paradise" is a favourite song of theirs, so if you know the words you can sing along....just kidding.

There are a couple of small magazines -The Beat is one, Best Bets is another - however they are free and you can pick them up in various places. They have restaurants, shops, maps and all sorts of information. They also list restaurants who do home delivery meals if you'd like to eat at home after a hard day slothing by the pool.

Have a wonderful time, watch out for the dogs and wear a hat, ha!

Catherine

don't forget to try "Dahana" and "Metis" at petitenget, kerobokan...

and "Mama's German" at legian street...

and of course "Bubba Gump" at kartika street, near Kuta Square..

not far from there, if you like pancake, or wanna try some frosty waffle, try "FlapJaks".. a lot of my friends like it so much...

For Your Information, now HardRock cafe already upgraded their place about a month ago... so try a brand new "Hardrock Cafe" at kuta beach street anyway..

far from kuta, go to ubud to "MOZAIK"...very nice place and delicious food....and of course don't forget to eat "Naughty Nuri's" Pork Ribs :p

cheers

Well, we are back now after three wonderful weeks in Bali. We did not have a bad meal the whole time - food everywhere is excellent. However, as to value... Most of the places along the Legian/Seminyak beach strip are seriously overpriced. There is one place that actually levies 21% "tax" (most other places that charge "tax" charge 10%) as well as a "service charge". This is a major rip-off, and surely they are being greedy. Because the food is already much more expensive than other good places. Some of these newer places seem to equate sky-high pricing with "exclusivity" - i.e., does it make you feel good to know you can spend $100 on a $50 meal. So I would recommend you avoid that area for meals, unless you meet that criterion. Places I can recommend - High End: La Lucciola in Seminyak. Still fantastic food and excellent service. These people understand the meaning of quality and class. Poppies Kuta: Had the best fish I have ever eaten - and I love seafood. And the service was superlative. But when we returned a week or so later, the fish was spoiled through overcooking and the waitperson we had was snooty and disinterested. Disappointing. But I will still recommend Poppies Restaurant as one of the best restaurants on the island. I just hope you go there on a night when the wait staff are not unhappy and the chef is having a good night. :) We went to Bali Cafe on Jl Oberoi ("Eat Street") on spec. If you want to mix it with the Beautiful People, wear your party dress and your backless stillettos - and pay through the nose - then this is the place for you. The place was very popular and crowded the night we wandered in. But I would not rush back. The food was quite ordinary by Bali standards. And not one meal on the menu came with vegetables! Could not even order vegies as a side! Just a very meagre salad. I don't mind spending money. After all, a night out in Australia is rarely cheap. But I don't like getting ripped off. :) For cafe/style eating, as opposed to your starched white linen tablecloths etc, the best food we ate was at Warung Kartini in Jl Raya Legian Gang XV. It is worth looking for. Indonesian cuisine. Basic but fantastic. And so cheap. A whole deep fried fish with spicy sauce will set you back A$5 or $6. Another favourite is Warung Yogya on Jl Padma Utara. Traditional Indonesian cuisine. Excellent and cheap. We had meals at many other places which were always good, if occasionally relatively expensive compared with what is available all over the place. I would also recommend Bebek Restaurant in Ubud. Upmarket and fantastic. Very reasonably priced for what you get, and a gorgeous setting amongst the rice paddies. Overall, I was hugely impressed with the quality of the food and cooking in Bali these days. I am more than happy to provide more info to anyone who is interested.
