Default Tipping in bali

hi,
just wondering what is a good amount to tip staff in our hotel as we usually leave some money on the bench in the room for them when they are cleaning but not sure how much to give and we dont want to be giving them the equivelent to 20c but would like to show our appreciation with out insulting them.

Thanks

Emma

it's really nice of you..
majoring tipping without insulting it will cost you about US$2.2
or equal to IDR20.000..
may be you can turn it down slightly..as US$1.1 = IDR 10.000..
but in many experience..they are like the 2.2..:D

I was wondering where you got your figures from?

I have been traveling to Bali for over 20 years and a tip has never been expected let alone an IDR amount as a minimum? Balinese or Indonesians working in Bali will graciously accept a tip of any amount with a smile weather it be a 500IDR coin or any other amount you wish to give!

For some travelers to Bali a meal costing 10,000 IDR would demand a tip of 20,000 IDR,twice the price of the original item or "insult" if your theory is correct?

Indonesia businesses add government tax and service charge that equals 21%,most time this is factored into the overall cost.

A tip of any amount above ++ (tax and service charge) is a bonus and appreciated, not tipping at all is not frowned upon as a tip is not expected anyway.

i'm totally agreed if you figured in that way..

you can give coin 500 as tipping..and as employee they must keep smile and serves the best to guest..

IMHO,tipping is how you appreciate person that serves you..
how much it is ?? it's depend to you how much you would like to give..

how much it if you would like to show our appreciation with out insulting them.??
i said 20k is the largest amount..

and you just need adjust the tips to what kind serves, things, food etc that you spent of..

yup....
it's true as fishy and you said..
and i've been agreed there's no standard regulation about the tipping..it's all depends how many you want to give..

but the topic just asked how much for the tipping..
so..there must be some amount in rupiahs that we should discuss in here..and just i said.. 20k in rupiahs is the largest amount for tipping..
thank you....

Whilst tipping is appreciated, it is not mandatory as in some other countries. What you tip (and IF you tip) is a matter of personal choice.
For me, I leave 10,000rph per day on my pillow - 5,000rph for each of the room cleaners.
I generally tip taxi drivers and waiters around 15,000 - 20,000.
At the end of my stay I give staff who have been helpful to me somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 rph.
The above are general figures only - all depend on circumstance.

Tipping isn't expected in Bali...however it is appreciated. I usually do the same as I do in my country...(tipping is expected in the USA..) which is to tip 15% which I feel is fair..that doesn't amount to much in rupiah and a simple rule of thumb..keeping in mind any amount is fine.
