Default Singapore Airlines

The one time I flew Garuda (SIN-DPS-SIN), we had to turn back 15 minutes after take off due to technical problems. We then waited five hours for a Garuda plane to be available, to fly us to Singapore. Since then, I've only flown SQ to Bali. Try their reservations website, www dot singaporeair dot com, for pricing and availability.

From what I've read Garuda is the safest Indonesian airline. Adam Air is a LOT worse apparently! BTW does anyone have a recommendation about how I can reserve a domestic flight from outside the country? I want to fly from Jakarta to Makassar during the last week of Ramadan. Flights are usually a bit full and expensive then. Does anyone (Mark maybe?) have contact details for a reliable agent? Online booking seems a bit too technically advanced as yet for Indonesian airlines. In fact even getting a clue as to flight schedules online seems a bit too technically advanced for most of them.

No, sorry Fio, I have no contacts regarding flights within Indonesia except the hotel agent I use in Jakarta (do not even know their details to give) and a long distant memory of an agent in Denpasar my friend used; but I do not have their info either

Sigh, I was afraid you'd say that Mark! Ah well, will just have to see what it's like when/if I get there as usual, won't I? No point whatsoever about asking about Pelni ferries from Makassar to the Banda Islands I take it?

Here's some reading material for people who enjoy being freaked out. Garuda Indonesia Flight 200 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
All Indonesian airlines are now banned in the EU because of safety standards. Indonesia has categorized its airlines according to their safety records. Garuda is the only airline they have put in band one (the safest category). If you read the above article you will see that the crash wasn't really all Garuda's fault....the airports in Indonesia themselves aren't exactly up to international standards either.

<<After the flight data and black box recordings were analyzed, and a complete safety review of the airport was conducted, it was revealed that the Yogyakarta Airport did not live up to international safety standards, having a runway runoff a quarter the recommended length; pilots reported the reverse thrust of one engine was not working prior to takeoff; the weather was calm, contradicting claims of an updraft; data recordings revealed no mechanical fault before landing; black box recordings revealed there was no cockpit argument, as reported; safety vehicles were unable to reach the crash site in sufficient time, not living up to global safety standards.>>

Adam Air was originally put in band 3 (the least safe category) but is now in band 2. Now read this...it's a lot more scary. Adam Air - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I flew on Adam Air once from Medan to Banda Aceh . At the time (September 05) it seemed safer than Mandala .... Mandala plane wreckage was still visible on the runway in Medan. The flight was fine as far as I remember. Since then I've used Lion Air several times and Sriwijaya Airlines and maybe some others. Haven't tried Garuda yet as they are more expensive and don't go to a lot of the places I want to go to anyway. I've survived so far but my luck may run out one day!
