hi, i will be traveling to bali for the first time in august. i'm a female in her mid-20s and i'll be traveling alone.

i'm thinking of starting off in sanur to chill out on the beaches then going to ubud as a base and hiring a driver to show me around the rest of the island. i'm wondering, though...would it be better for me to start off in a livelier area like kuta or legian? i'm not much of a partier or a drinker, but i don't want to be stuck out in a bungalow surrounded by couples on their honeymoons, either.

any advice on accommodation is welcome, as well...i am on a budget, so inexpensive to low moderate suggestions, please.

oh, and one more question. i'll be on vacation for about 12 days. i am thinking of going to KL for about 3 days, which, including travel time from my home, will give me about 6-7 days in bali, give or take. will i be wishing for more time, or do you think it's a good amount of time to see the major sights?

Sanur would be my personal preference as it is quiet. However, at your age I think you would have a better chance of meeting more people your own age in Kuta or Legian. Legian is nice and has many good places to eat. I have only stayed at the Puri Raja in Legian which was reasonably priced.

You will love Ubud where there is lots of good accommodation for all budgets. I recently (last year) stayed at the Tegal Sari which was good value.

There is plenty to do and see in Ubud and it is a good base. Hiring a driver will not be a problem.

If you want budget accom in Legian try Sri Ratu.

It is a family run place that for about 15 bucks a night with air con pool and breakie, not bad.

You might not seem the family type but we could certainly show you around the traps.

chill out on Sanur's beaches; you will be pestered, like on most of Bali's beaches. Chill out beaches are Pemuteran and Amed; the later has a fairly young (and other) following, not as brash as Kuta. I would do 3 / 4 nights Ubud, maybe take in Besakih and the lovely water palace at Tirtagangga on the way, then the rest Amed. Ubud is only 1 hour from the airport, so not bad for when you arrive and well worth it.
