Default best way of transport on Bali ?

Can someone inform me what is the best to do during a stay on Bali for let's say 3-4 weeks ?
> renting a car ?
> taking taxi's ?
> is it possible to hire a driver with private car?
Thanks
Daniel

Talking Some advice

I hate driving in Bali. It is dangerous, no-one has insurance and as a foreigner you will always be held responsible even when you were not involved in the actual accident. People sit in dark clothes on unlit busy narrow roads at night, children run out into the road, motorcycle insurance is no longer available and so no motorbike rider has any. In short, I think you are nuts if you drive yourself.

I would use taxis (the blue ones) in the south and find a decent safe driver with well maintained car elsewhere. Tourist drivers are meant to be licensed; most are not. I would pay the extra to get a licensed driver with a decent car. Never ride a bike in Bali; life is too short as it is. Look out for chickens and truck drivers playing chicken on the road. Avoid driving at night at all costs. Be extra careful when walking alongside roads, especially at night. Drive little, enjoy more, live longer.

its all a personal choice really. insist on the meter going on in taxi's..ALWAYS get blue taxis. (90% have aircon that works and all have a meter)you may think 40,000 rup is cheap when you are offered ' special price' (5.5 aus) but the flagfall is only 4 or 5000rupiah!
you can hire a "guide" with a van. pay no more than 200,000 for a whole day, in fact a blue taxi will often let you rent him and the cab for that for the day.
if you get a van and driver, make sure the van he is showing you is the one he will be taking you in!! pay NO money up front (booking)
sorry mark, absolutly love motorcycles myself. always get one. yes, be careful, its a blast. one toot = i am here. 2 toots = i am passing or coming thru. we rent harleys also. awesome!! no good in town but great to the mountains etc.
it is organised chaos and a matter of getting used to it and how it runs.
pay no more than 30,000 per day for a scooter. 20-25000 per day if renting for more than 5 days.
good luck and have fun whatever you decide to do.
