Default Ubud, Royal cremation July 08

Hi all,

I thought it was time I gave a mini report on what was one of the highlights during my trip to Ubud recently in July, the Royal cremation - 2 kings and 90 others all on one day! The smoke didn't clear for days. The float was 25 metres high (phone photo attached), the 2 bulls 10 metres high, and were carried the 1.5 km to the cremation ground by 30,000 men in relays of 400 at a time. Power and communication infrastructure between the palace and the cremation ground had to be removed for the day. Jl Raya from Campuan to near the palace became a carpark for taksi, cars and bikes (phone photo attached to next post). I have never seen so many people in Ubud! Or sarong sellers for that matter!

I don't know about this one but the next largest cremation in Ubud was about 10 years ago when 6 men with buckets of water in hand
were allocated to each roof of nearby accommodation villas to put the villas out as they caught fire.

Regards,

David

That would have been one heck of an experience . I have seen a few smaller ceremonies in Bali but nothing anywhere near that scale.
Cheers laurs
