a motor bike is easy from hotels etc, and well worthwhile.
We are an "older" couple, and did this.
We stayed at Sengiggi, and found the ride north to the departure point to the Gillis (Bangsal)to be very picturesque, and certainly puts Balis coastline into a shadow (try a trip to Gilli Air if you can).
I even enjoyed a ride into Mataram, to look at local markets etc. and with all cimodos everywhere (horse drawn carts), this has a real "old Asian" feel.
I have not been, but believe that the S.E. coast, around Kuta is also very picturesque.
A trip to the foothills of Mt. Rinjani? is also on my list of to dos.
Sengiggi has (or at least had) many eateries, and at budget prices. It is convenient to land at Mataram airport and take a taxi, it is about 15 mins drive north.
Re- accom, there are many reasonable places, especially at the moment, and I am sure that other contributors can provide this, and additional advice.
Enjoy your trip.
