Agree it is important to have a driver you can relate to. There have been numerous drivers recommended on this forum. I have written down the names in my notebook of those with personal recommendations. You could probably look on this site for some. We have a driver we have used for several years, but he is based in Kuta. His name is I Wayan Artana and his email address is iartana@hotmail dot com Wayan has taken us all over Bali - he charged 250,000 per day but we gave him 300,000 with a tip - he is a lovely man, with very good English. I would imagine that with the higher prices of petrol now that the price should be higher. When are you going to be in Bali?
With regard to Hotels in Ubud, we have stayed in a number of them over the years, including Tegal Sari
(which we enjoyed, and it is very reasonable in price)
They have new wooden rooms now - and will be opening new ones in July. We will stay there again this June, but have not decided which days.
One small hotel on Jalan Bisma, very close to the village, but quiet and peaceful is "Samhita Garden"
We have stayed here four times, and love it. (Was called Santika Garden". We always book room near pool, upstairs. Their advertised rates are US95, but you can negotiate for around 65 to 75. They also have suites with own pool. This is a lovely area, close to the village and the road has been paved with donated paving. The Honeymoon guest house is nearby.
We enjoy staying in different areas, and exploring that particular environment when there.
Hotel Tjumpuhan is also very good, on a hillside, lovely views and was one of the first hotels in the area.
