other related things like travel insurance I have found that IATA doesn't appear to say anywhere on their site that they will cover people who's airline goes bust. Likewise it appears that unless etremely expensive, and probably insurance that isn't worked out for the masses (ie: personally worked out insurance) insurance is unlikely to cover you either.
It is actually alarming when you look at the internet on the subject, it is, isn't always the cheap airlines that are at risk, in fact it seems that some very well known names are teetering on the verge. Names that you almost think are the national airline of a given country.
In fact one of the sites I looked at was a site for worried business men, suggesting what they could do about this worry...their solution seemed to be , "do video conferencing instead."!
However, that doesn't seem to me to be a solution of how to safeguard your much longed for holiday a few hours of looking at a DVD telling me just how much the people who are already there are enjoying themselves I don't think will make up for the loss!
Apparently according to another site, there used to be a situation whereby other airlines would take pity on those stranded, or unable to go, and sort things out, this (apparently) is much less likely to be the case these days, and people usually have to find them selves onto another airline at their own expense.
What a lovely world! But as Carol said, at least they have their health and each other, but it IS sad. The world was becoming a better place because people travelled and got to understand how other cultures worked, what a shame if everybody has to return to holidaying five miles from home, and the only people who can afford to travel are those who can afford to lose the price of a long-hall flight.
