Sorry for the pun, but I visited Bali in September and stayed in 3 places - Ubud, Lovina and the south. Personally, I much preferred Lovina and Ubud to the south. More 'Bali' and less 'Benidorm', plus it's quieter so they need your tourism. If you are worried about getting out and about from Lovina you can use the local bus or you can hire a car and driver for a very cheap price. Lovina is much cheaper than the south for this, and for food and accomodation. Try the Jasmine Kitchen Thai place and the Kubu Lalang for food. The beach isn't great but the sea is really calm (perfect for snorkelling or swimming) and has gorgeous sunsets. Ubud is also really nice - I stayed at Alam Indah and can recommend it as a chill out place.
