I stayed at Taman Sari last year with my son and grandson. Before we left New Zealand there had been adverse comments about Taman Sari on the Forum so I kept my eyes open for the faults mentioned. You can read my report in the archives - follow the thread through Jan in September 2004. She comments on my entry "To Bali with love - and William".
I can only suppose you had the same unit as Klovansky and/or Laura. Or else the proprietors read the Forum and made a point of polishing the place up a bit for us. Certainly the rooms were tired but who wouldn't be, with the life they lead. It is a beach hotel after all.
We had planned to go back but circumstances got in the way. My youngest son took me for a cruise on the 'Tahitian Princess' earlier this year and next year William is going to Viet Nam so sadly, Bali must wait.
