I agree that Ubud is a nice little town, but Lovina is also lovely. I don't think it is as bad as some people make out! Yes the beach may not be as 'nice' as other areas, but it depends what you call nice. I personally live near the beach all year round, so am not that bothered if a beach isn't that picture perfect white sand turquoise water place that people expect when they go to Asia. Apart from a few hawkers, the beach in lovina is very peaceful, which makes a nice change.
Also, it is laid back and the selection of restaurants is great. I would definitely go back. It really made a nice change to the more touristy south. Food prices are quite high (for asia) in some of the main restaurants, but there are cheaper options too.
If price is a worry for you, don't let it be. You say you can't afford the south, but I backpacked in indonesia for 3 months this year and you can find very cheap accommodation and food everywhere, if you look hard enough.
